Modern Interpretations, Traditional Origins Conversation

Jill Heppenheimer will lead a conversation with Irvin Trujillo, a Rio Grande weaver, DY Begay, a Navajo weaver, and Jo Smith, of Ock Pop Tok from Laos, discussing how traditional
techniques and motifs influence their contemporary work. Breakfast included.

Inspiration and World Costume

Take a visual tour of the world’s costumes to see how we meld the influences of ethnic costumes, textiles, and design. Tradition is translated into fashion, trends, and design sources. In her PowerPoint lecture, Susan will show the significance of folk or ethnic costume—how it has evolved, why it remains, and how it relates to current fashion trends, couture, ready-to-wear, and knock-offs.

Examining the mechanics, logic, and passion of working with a gallery, Jill Heppenheimer, a gallerist for 18 years, will take you through the considerations of selling wholesale vs. retail, consignment vs. outright purchase, pricing strategies, product development and building a collection, having a portfolio, presenting in person vs. on a website, protocol for ongoing relationship building, comarketing,
and more. Breakfast included.

HGA’s 40th Birthday Celebration

Join in the celebration as we commemorate HGA’s 40th birthday. Experience a journey to honor our beginnings, reflect on ancient paths, and take a step or two into exploring new visions. An adventure of exciting possibilities and great fun for all.
- Have you ever wanted to try kumihimo? “Become” one of the bobbins and, with seven other “bobbin” friends, follow the directions to make a life-size kumihimo braid.
- Do you remember the special waulking event with Norman Kennedy at Convergence 98 in Atlanta? Well, New Mexico is the home to Churro sheep, and we will have the opportunity to participate in a community felting project that is guaranteed to be a barrel of fun.
- Come participate in an informal fashion show with your current creations... Also remember your earlier days when HGA was founded, and bring some “retro” garments. What have you done in the last forty years? Have YOU come a long way, baby?
