LOCAL GUILD JOINS INTERNATIONAL CELEBRATION
The Homespun Weavers Guild will be joining spinners, handweavers, dyers and basketweavers to observe Spinning and Weaving Week, October 4-10, 2004.
Special events for the week include an open meeting with displays, demonstrations and refreshments on Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Center. The public is invited. In addition, guild members will be presenting demonstrations in the foyer of the public library each morning from 10-12. They have arranged an exhibit of handspun and handwoven items in the lobby of the First National Bank, 13 North Main Street, Midtown, during the week.
Homespun Weavers is one of more than 800 weaving guilds around the country devoted to preserving and practicing the traditional textile crafts of spinning and weaving. Founded 15 years ago by a charter group of ten, the guild now has a membership of 76 men and women.
In addition to monthly meetings, the Handspun Weavers Guild provides volunteer demonstrations at schools and for the Historical Society, as well as programs for interested groups. It holds an annual holiday fair and sale each November to which the public is invited. This year's sale is scheduled for November 21-22 at the Community Center.
Meetings of the guild are held every second Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. Programs include guest speakers and teachers, demonstrations and workshops. Anyone interested in visiting a guild meeting may call president Merry Weaver, (333) 444-5555, for further information.
Spinning and Weaving Week is an annual event sponsored by the Handweavers Guild of America, Inc., a membership organization with affiliated guilds in all states and 28 countries.
