Small Expressions 2018

July 1-15, 2018 at The Wilbur D. May Museum, Reno Nevada, USA

Small Expressions is an annual juried exhibit featuring high quality, contemporary small-scale works using fiber techniques in any media, not to exceed 15 inches (38 cm) in any direction including mounting, framing, or display devices.

 

Juror: Virginia Vogel is a professor of Art at the University of Nevada Reno specializing in fiber, visual foundations and fashion history and style. She has also taught costuming and serves as secretary for the Costume Design Group for the Organization of International Scenographers, Theater Architects and Technicians.

 

 





Great Basin Basketry Exhibit 

 

 

July 6-12, 2018 at the Peppermill Resort, Reno, Nevada, USA

Ervin teapotGreat Basin refers to the geographical bowl of the area and is a source of natural weaving materials for the basket maker. The area has been used over the centuries by the native peoples who have called the Great Basin their home. Extending the concept of using indigenous materials, this exhibit encourages and emphasizes the use of materials from the artist's environment and features functional or nonfunctional, traditional or nontraditional forms in basketry techniques.

 Juror: Marcia Weiss is an internationally exhibited artist with works held in private collections in Europe and the United States. Her basketry work has been commissioned for site-specific installation in France and for shows in the USA. In addition to spending time in her studio, Marcia is the Director of the Fashion & Textiles Futures Center at Philadelphia University and Thomas Jefferson University where she teaches advanced studio courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels, including 3D textiles.

 

 


The Playa Mixed Media Exhibit

The Playa is a wide open plain on which you can let your creative energy burst forth with a variety of fiber techniques and/or materials. Nevada's Black Rock Desert is famous for being a center of experimental happenings. In this exhibit artists push boundaries with their high quality, contemporary works created in any material using any fiber technique.

Juror: Louise Lemieux Bérubé’s woven Jacquards have received numerous honors and were exhibited in Canada and many countries. She has traveled around the world showing her work. Louise cofounded the Montreal Centre for Contemporary Textiles and is the author of Le Tissage Créateur, a manual for designers in weaving of all levels.

 

 

 

Truckee River Yardage Exhibit 

July 6-12, 2018 at the Peppermill Resort, Reno, Nevada, USA 

Deeds Yardage

Inspired by the fluid motion of the waters that flow through the heart of Reno, Truckee River features lengths of woven, constructed and/or embellished yardage using any fiber arts technique.

Juror: Marcy Petrini is currently a contributing special features writer for "Right from the Start" in Shuttle Spindle & Dyepot magazine. She received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Craftsman Guild of Mississippi, Inc. in 2016 for her teaching, jurying and other service. She has been teaching weaving and other fiber topics for over 45 years.

 

 

 

 



City Lights, Festive Nights Wearable Art Exhibit

July 7-12, 2018 at the Peppermill Resort, Reno, Nevada, USA

In the biggest little city full of lights, casinos, glamour, and a history of the longest running show full of costumed show girls; inspired by the area, these artists’ works are creative wearable art. Exhibit includes three invited artists: Karen Burns, Jill Altmann and Sarah Fortin; and the works of students participating in the Fashion Design Challenge.

 

Juror: Daryl Lancaster received her B.A. in Fine Arts from Montclair State University. She was a production weaver for 10 years, selling her work through various craft markets and galleries in the Northeast. She began teaching and found the ability to guide and inspire other handweavers in the necessary skills to create their own well fitted and well-constructed garments. Daryl has been sewing for more than 50 years and teaching garment construction and related topics to weavers and other fiber enthusiasts across North America. She has written numerous articles and essays and maintains a blog linking life and the creative process.
